Ep. 35 Meet NYC Fitness Trainer, Jessica Bailey
Jessica Bailey has been an active member of the fitness community in NYC for 15 years. As a certified fitness instructor, she has taught at Physique 57, Exhale Spa, Pure Yoga, Reebok Sports Club, Sports Club/LA, Chelsea Piers, Be Fit NYC and Mercedes Club. As a personal trainer, she has helped hundreds of clients lose weight, tone up and train for various athletic events. She is certified in group fitness, senior fitness, Pilates, and yoga; and she is trained in Barre, bootcamp and pre/post natal fitness.
What inspired you to get into the fitness industry?
Jessica has always been an active member of the fitness community. She was constantly taking any fitness class the gym had to offer. While taking a friends workout class, he advised everyone attending that Jessica will be teaching the next class in his absence. That is when Jessica fell in love with teaching.
“It was great because as I was learning as I was teaching and that’s the best way to do anything; trial by error. The only way you’re going to get good at something is to do it, so I did.”
What inspired Jessica about the fitness industry were the challenges, the research and collecting knowledge about the body and how to train.
“It was just something that clicked and it was just something that was like a calling; this is what I am supposed to be doing.”
How did you transition to fitness full-time?
After college, Jessica was teaching at a small women’s club and doing about 10-15 classes a week to keep financially afloat. She discovered that she was able to connect with people and people were able to connect with her. Since fitness was a passion, she jumped in full- time and started her own fitness club.
What do you like most about what you do?
Jessica says what she loves most about her career right now is a new method she has been learning and teaching. It is a new method that isolates muscles and by using a ballet bar. She says it is tough, but a lot of women like it because it is low impact and easier on their bodies.
What do you like most about being in business for yourself?
Jessica says that freedom is what makes it great. She doesn’t belong to anyone. She gets to make the decisions and she’s not giving her money away to a gym where she is only an employee.
““I like calling my own shots; I am not responsible to anyone else but me, that’s really why I slowly started pulling away from training at a gym.”
What are your client’s biggest mistakes when trying to reach their fitness goals?
Jessica explains that people’s biggest mistake is weight loss and how weight loss works.
“I feel like that’s always a struggle letting people understand that you need to aim for a calorie deficit by the end of the day.”
What technique or process you wish other people knew about?
Jessica’s uniqueness is her ability to connect with her clients. Her personality is naturally caring and giving and that is why she has long-term clients.
“It’s what I do because I care about these people. I care about my clients and I think that’s why I’ve had clients for as long as I have.”
What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
Jessica says she has learned that setting boundaries when it comes to your business is very important. She has learned that you need to take time for your life outside of work.
“I could work from the moment I get up to the moment I go to bed.”
What is your biggest challenge in your business now?
Jessica says her biggest challenge currently is scheduling new clients and trying to fit them in, without having to disrupt her other long-term clients.
How do you stay cutting edge?
Jessica stays cutting edge by doing her research, attending a number of fitness classes, and trying new techniques. Jessica says she learns by doing and also by watching other trainers and seeing their different methods.”
“You don’t learn by yourself, you learn from other people right? So I take classes a lot.”
Jessica also attends many workshops on fitness to stay up to date on any changes in a constantly changing industry.
