Dr. Michele Summers Colon is the author of Body Wisdom: 10 Weeks to Transformation So You Can Get and Feel Healthy Again. She is also a physician, entrepreneur, yoga instructor, and a motivational speaker offering workshops and online courses based on her book. She hopes to inspire women to live happier, healthier lives that honor their own bodies, wants, and desires. How did you get started in this industry?
Dr. Colon always knew she wanted to be a doctor and after college she started her journey in Podiatry School. She has since had her own practice for 19 years. She started practicing holistic medicine for the last five to six years, after being misdiagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. When traditional western medicine was not helping, she took her health into her own hands and started by practicing Ayurveda and Yoga as an alternative attempt to get her health back.
“All these things that were building up over time just started getting better and better and as I got deeper and deeper in to that Ayurvedic lifestyle.”
She then made the decision to incorporate these sciences into her own practice.
What do you love most about what you do?
Dr. Michele loves it most when people come to her in pain and leave pain-free. With her holistic approach, she is able to spend the time with her patients to educate them on changes they can do to heal themselves.
“Just kind of opening their minds to what is possible, and you don’t need an injection, we can work with it this way.”
How did your book transpire?
Dr. Colon works one-on-one and with groups and she wrote her book so her teaching can be more accessible to the public. She shares that it also was written as a guide for her courses.
What is the biggest mistake you see from your clients?
She notes she has had clients that have been limping for over a year before they sought help. Dr. Michele says by all means exhaust your options to heal yourself at home, but don’t wait too long to see the doctor.
“The biggest mistake is they wait so long to come see me.”
Dr. Colon gives us advice about the three worst shoes people could wear: flats, Uggs and flip flops. She recommends wearing shoes with arch support, like a sneaker, or even a hiking boot that has sufficient support.
What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
Dr. Colon says she wishes she would have incorporated the holistic way of healing into her practice long ago.
“When I was younger, I kind of held back a little on trying new things because I wanted to fit in with the norm.”
What are your biggest successes?
Just working in my community is what she sees as a big success.
“I work with a lot of diabetic patients and when you save a diabetic’s leg, you are saving their life.”
What are you most impactful books?
Her own book, “Seven Reasons why Yoga is Better Than Medicine”, “Crush It!” by Gary Vaynerchuk, “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olsen and “The One Thing” by Gary Keller are the books that have had the most impact on her.
Who is your ideal client?
Dr. Michele says her ideal client is someone who is tired of not getting answers from the healthcare field and is looking for holistic ways of up levelling their health and healing themselves.
