Ep. 47 Functional Medicine Practitioner, Rich Jacobs

FitPro Industry Podcast Interview with Rich Jacobs

Rich Jacobs is a functional medicine practitioner who loves helping women, 25-45, overcome common health issues such as fatigue, insomnia and low libido. As a former collegiate strength and conditioning coach, Rich understands the spectrum of health from athlete to non-athlete. He became passionate about helping others holistically through his own health issues that doctors couldn’t resolve. He now works with people all over the country using his health detective skills to find the root cause of common health issues to eliminate symptoms for good.

Rich Jacobs – Show Notes

How did you get started in this industry?

Rich started out in the strength and conditioning side of fitness, and he has always been interested in the human body. He decided to go to school for exercise psychology and then he continued on to personal training. Eventually he moved on to the colligate level as a strength and conditioning coach.

How did you transition to what you are doing today?

Rich says after eight years of coaching at the college level he got burnt out and make a change, but he fell sick and his doctors could not determine what was wrong. That led him to studying functional diagnostic nutrition and functional medicine.

“Now I’ve learned and (I’m) trained how to do that for other people.”

The number one underlying factor for most symptoms (fatigue, low libido, stomach issues and insomnia etc.) is stress, whether it is internal or external.

What can people do today to start improving their sleep and energy?

He shares that one thing people can start doing right now is refraining from any screen time (Phones, IPad’s, TV etc.) about an hour to an hour and a half before you plan on going to sleep. This allows your body to produce the melatonin your body needs to sleep. Another improvement measure would be to stop caffeine.

“Unfortunately people get in to a cycle (with caffeine), so they end up being tired and wired.”

What does DRESS mean?

Diet, Rest, Exercise, Stress Reduction, and Supplementation.

This is how Rich explains the pillars of how he works with clients.

“It’s a lifestyle change.”

What do you wish you knew then that you know now?

“I wish I knew how hard it was going to be to start your own business.”

Rich finds he is still working everyday on his business and he stays on track by having a business coach.

What is the biggest challenge you face in this business?

“The biggest challenge is awareness. Getting awareness out there to what I do and also content; always putting out content.”

What is your biggest success so far?

Rich says he is starting to get some traction on getting the awareness out there and people are becoming more interested in how they can help themselves holistically.

Defining his niche was a large success for him as well. He found his niche was too broad at the beginning.

How do you stay on the cutting edge?

“I love education. I mean this field is always changing, there is always new research coming out.”

What are your most impactful books?

“Why We Get Fat” by Gary Taubes, “Book Yourself Solid” by Michael Port and “Reach For The Summit” by Pat Summitt have impacted Rich the most.

Who is your ideal client?

Thie ideal client for him is a 25-45 year old female athlete, former athlete or a crossfitters.
