Prioritizing Your Mind and Gut Health - Mental Health Awareness Month

May is National Mental Health Awareness Month – Time to Prioritize Your Mind and Gut Health!

How are you feeling these days?

We truly want to know – not just on the surface level, but how are you TRULY feeling?🙏🏻

The reason we ask is, did you know that May is National Mental Health Awareness Month?

It’s a time to focus on taking care of our mental health and well-being. And, with everything going on in the world right now, it’s more important than ever to prioritize our mental wellness.

Mental Health Statistics:

What is really crazy, is that mental health statistics can be pretty alarming, with one in five adults in the United States experiencing mental wellness challenges and one in six children aged six to 17 experiencing a mental health disorder.

And, with the recent pandemic, these numbers have only increased.😲

A recent survey found that nearly four in ten adults in the United States reported symptoms of anxiety, stress or depressive disorder during the pandemic.

Here’s the thing: our gut health is actually uniquely connected to our mental wellness.

The Gut Brain Connection

YES!  The gut-brain connection (or axis) is a communication network between the gut and the brain.

What most people do NOT know is that as a fetus the gut and the brain are actually connected and as we grow they separate as 2 separate parts that stay connected through the vagus nerve.

This connection allows the brain to influence the gut, and the gut to influence the brain. And, it turns out, the gut microbiome, which is the ecosystem of trillions of bacteria in our gut, plays a significant role in maintaining our mental wellness. <—- this is HUGE!!!

Recent research has found a link between changes in the gut microbiome and the development of mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, and even autism.

One of the ways the gut microbiome affects our mental wellness is through the production of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow neurons in the brain to communicate with each other.

Some neurotransmitters, like serotonin and dopamine, are associated with positive emotions and are often called “feel-good” neurotransmitters.🥰

The gut microbiome produces many of these neurotransmitters, and imbalances in the gut microbiome can lead to imbalances in neurotransmitter production, leading to mood disorders!!!

And, another way in which the gut microbiome affects mental wellness is through the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). SCFAs are produced when bacteria in the gut ferment dietary fiber.

SCFAs play a role in regulating inflammation in the gut and the entire body. This is key, because Inflammation has been linked to the development of many mental health disorders, including depression and anxiety.

Supporting our Gut Health and Mental Wellness

So, what can we do to support our gut health and, in turn, our mental wellness?

One option is to consume a diet rich in fiber. Fiber feeds the good bacteria in our gut, helping them to produce SCFAs. Foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are all great sources of fiber.

Another way to support our gut health is to consume probiotics. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can be found in foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut.

However, understanding that not just ANY probiotics, but SPECIFIC strains of probiotics, prebiotics and phytobiotics that are clinically PROVEN to support gut health, stress resilience and positive mood, motivation and mental energy!!

Taking care of our mental health is so important, especially right now. And, as it turns out, taking care of our gut health can be a crucial piece of the puzzle. So, let’s prioritize our mental wellness this month and beyond by supporting our gut health through nutrition and supplementation.
