Ep. 28 Interview with Rick Mayo of Alloy Personal Training Solutions
Rick Mayo is the founder and CEO of North Point Fitness (est. 1992) and Alloy Personal Training Solutions. As the owner of North Point Fitness, Rick and his team conduct over 50,000 personal training sessions a year. In 2010, Rick created Alloy, a consulting and licensing company as a platform for the North Point business/personal training systems. Alloy has consulted with over 500 clubs and has licensees worldwide in markets as far away as Tasmania and Poland.

What is your background?
When Rick was a junior in college, he was a 270-lb bodybuilder, wanting to be as big and strong as he could be.
“That’s sort of where the industry was at the time. In the early 1990’s, bodybuilding was fitness.”
As he was paying his way through school as a personal trainer, he opened his first small training facility in 1992.
Between 1992 and 1998, he doubled the space and was doing $1 million in training a year out of 3,000 square feet.
In 1999, a group of his trainers left to start their own gym, taking 40% of his business with them. In a short period of time, his business went from generating $83,000 per month, to $12,000. Rick knew he needed to develop his processes to do things better.
“We pulled up our bootstraps and learned how to really run a business”
It took them 18 months to be back on their feet, using multiple systems. This lead to them consulting personal trainers and other club owners on how to improve their businesses. Five years ago, Rick was approached by Gold’s Gym to implement his system in their facilities.
“What almost sank me became a real blessing in disguise”
What are the most common mistakes you see?
Rick says that many people going to gyms suffer from “analysis by paralysis” and it’s hard to cut through the noises and myths.
“Move more and eat less. That’s still a really good place to start.”
They ask for an annual commitment for their training clients. The high dollar amount has the effect of making the client take the process seriously.
What are some of your success stories?
Rick’s trainers have helped clients lose anywhere from 10 to 250 lbs.
“At the end of the day, it’s about getting them on track and holding them accountable”
What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
He wishes he had systems in place from the very start, for everything.
“Your key performance indicators are so important”
What is your biggest challenge now?
Now that Rick has four businesses, he says that learning how to leverage the talents of other people and technology to be able to lead better has been his biggest challenge.
“You have to get it done”
What do you enjoy the most about what you do?
Rick says that being able to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars to national and local charities last year is what he has enjoyed the most about what his does.
How do you stay on the cutting edge?
He still takes additional PT certifications and is part of a nationwide mastermind group made up of successful businessmen outside of his industry.
“It’s nice to learn general best business practices that aren’t specific to the industry from a group of guys who have done it”
